This painting has a kind of comic book feel to
it. After erasing the pencil lines the fingers grasping the arm just
popped out. I think a painting is successful if it teaches you
something new. It also has to have some design elements in place. I
wasn't intentionally going to make this woman a captain of a ship but
after finishing her she just seemed to look like one. I added the
background ship wheel to gift the viewer just a bit more information. I
do think she looks stern and focused on something in the distant. I
would have liked to have a life model to work with. The form needs
some work but, taking and creating a figure from several photos is not
the easiest thing to do. I also like the looseness in the blue dress.
