Thirty Paintings in 30 Days- Day 4- Mr. Greenwood Tortoise

Mr. Greenwood Tortoise travels over the countryside.  He has within his shell some of the most amazing chocolates created with his perfectly precision steam contraption.  His secret is kept safe within his shell.   Everyone runs to get his candies before he sells out.   Time is always on his side as he travels making a slow and steady profit.

  Pencil Sketch of Tortoise

I am including some of my steps in creating this painting.   My drawing is done in pencil, carefully using a reference photo to begin the tortoise
shape.   I am thinking of what can't be left out in creating a likeness of a tortoise.   I started with the head and drew in the shell shape first.   The shape of the head with the neck wrinkles were important.  I wanted to make sure the bottom of the shell didn't get lost in the painting.  I later decided to add green at the last minute to enhance the color of the bronze and brown.

I added the water to set him in a place.   The winding water created a feeling of movement in time.  It makes you think "Wow he sure traveled far to bring us his chocolates".

I hope you have been enjoying my steampunk paintings.  Looking forward to bringing you more throughout the month of September.   Have a fun Labor Day Weekend.
